Hidden in plain sight: Alex, France

1. Château d'Arenthon (17th century) 2. Sculptured cross (16th century) in front of La Nativité-de-Marie church

This week I went to a yoga class in the sweetest little village called Alex. Somehow, despite it being 12 minutes from my house, I’d never been there before. I suppose because it’s hidden in plain sight, tucked into the hillside overlooking Dents de Lanfon and Massif des Bornes mountains.

The yoga studio was in a little outbuilding on the castle grounds, but since the weather was nice we practiced outside on the grass overlooking the valley. Instead of music, we listened to distant cowbells. I mean it was ridiculously serene.

After class, I had a wander through the village and found this memorial:

A grateful tribute
from the former pupils
and residents of Alex
to their devoted teacher
Alice Déléan
née Bouvier
who was deported and died
at the Mauthausen concentration camp
on 20 March 1945

1. Alice Déléan, née Bouvier 2. Memorial in Alex
